PA Business Insurance: Learn how to safely use your extension cords!

When you are running a PA business, insurance forms part of your risk management, but it is not the total picture. You also need to practice safety at all times to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, fire, or other disasters.

Electrical safety in any business is very important. Often when you have many machines, computers, and/or appliances on your premises, you might make use of extension cords. This is fine as a temporary solution, but extension cords should not be used permanently, and care needs to be taken in their use. Tips for safe use include:
• Check for an authentic Underwriters Laboratories “UL” safety label, as well as rating information and the name and details of the manufacturer. Watch out for cheap cords that contain thin copper wiring.
• Check the cord’s capacity so that you use the correct one for the job.
• Use a separate cord for each appliance and do not string them together or plug double adapters into them.
• Use shorter cords as this ensures a better energy flow.
• Make sure that cords do not get “pinched” by furniture – this can cause them to short out.
• Discard old, worn, or damaged cords immediately.
• Install more power outlets in your premises to avoid long-term use of extension cords.
Electrical safety can sometimes be overlooked when you are running a busy organization. However, it is essential if you want to not only reduce your risk of fire, but also to avoid having to lodge claims against your PA business insurance policy!
